What is an HS code?

The Harmonised System (HS) is a standardised international product nomenclature maintained by the World Customs Organisation. Every internationally traded good has a 6-digit HS code (countries extend to 8, 10, or 12 digits for tariff and statistical purposes). The HS code dictates:

Import tariff
in the destination country
Free-trade-agreement preferential treatment
eligibility
Sanitary, phytosanitary, and customs documentation
required
Statistical reporting
for trade-flow analysis

If you're importing from Egypt, you and your customs broker need the right HS code at line-item level on the Bill of Lading, Commercial Invoice, and Certificate of Origin. The wrong code can mean over-payment of duty, customs delays, or legal exposure.

HS codes for building and construction materials

Building-material shipments from Egypt clear under Chapter 25 while the stone or mineral is unworked, and move to Chapter 68 once it is cut into slabs or tiles. Cement detail: HS 2523 reference; gypsum and plaster: HS 2520 reference.

Sea salt and rock salt — one HS heading

Sea salt and rock salt share the international heading 2501.00 — solar-evaporated sea salt and mined rock salt are classified the same way. The digits after 2501.00 are national, and they follow the salt's use, not its source. In the EU Combined Nomenclature and the UK Global Tariff: 2501.00.31 — salt for chemical transformation (sodium–chlorine separation, e.g. chlor-alkali); 2501.00.51 — denatured salt or salt for other industrial uses; 2501.00.91 — salt suitable for human consumption; 2501.00.99 — other salt. Other destinations use their own extensions, so confirm the line-level code with your customs broker.

How to use this glossary

Given the destination market, your customs broker may apply a country-specific 8/10/12-digit extension. The 6-digit codes here are stable globally — start from these, then extend per-country.

If you're unsure which code applies to a specific Egyptian commodity, send us your specification and we'll return the canonical HS code at line-item level along with a sample Commercial Invoice line.

Frequently asked questions

What is an HS code, and why does the right one matter?
The Harmonised System is an international product nomenclature maintained by the World Customs Organisation. Every traded good has a 6-digit HS code, and countries extend it to 8, 10 or 12 digits for tariff and statistical purposes. The code dictates the import tariff, free-trade-agreement preferential eligibility, the sanitary, phytosanitary and customs documentation required, and statistical reporting. The wrong code can mean over-payment of duty, customs delays or legal exposure.
Which HS codes cover Egyptian salt?
Internationally, heading 2501.00 covers all salt, sea salt and rock salt alike. National tariffs add the digits after it: in the EU and UK, 2501.00.31 is salt for chemical transformation, 2501.00.51 denatured or industrial-use salt, 2501.00.91 salt suitable for human consumption and 2501.00.99 other salt. Other destinations use their own extensions.
Which HS codes cover Egyptian cement and clinker?
2523.10.00 — cement clinker, exported to grinding mills; 2523.21.00 — white Portland cement; 2523.29.00 — other Portland cement (CEM I, CEM II, SRC); 2523.30.00 — aluminous cement; 2523.90.00 — other hydraulic cements.
Which HS codes cover Egyptian fertilizers?
3102.10.00 — urea; 3102.21.00 — ammonium sulphate; 3103.11.00 — triple super phosphate (TSP); 3103.19.00 — single super phosphate (SSP); 3103.90.00 — other mineral phosphate fertilizers; 3105.20.00 — NPK fertilizers; 3105.30.00 — DAP; 3105.40.00 — MAP.
Where does the HS code have to appear on the export documents?
At line-item level on the Bill of Lading, the Commercial Invoice and the Certificate of Origin — you and your customs broker both need the right code on each of them.
Which HS codes apply to building and construction materials exported from Egypt?
Portland cement 2523.29 and cement clinker 2523.10; marble blocks 2515.11, granite blocks 2516.11 and cut marble slabs 6802.21; aggregates 2517.10; dolomite 2518.10; gypsum rock 2520.10 and calcined plaster 2520.20; limestone 2521.00; silica sand 2505.10.
Do sea salt and rock salt share the same HS code?
Yes. Both are classified under heading 2501.00, whether solar-evaporated sea salt or mined rock salt. The national subheading follows the use, not the source: in the EU and UK, for example, 2501.00.91 is salt suitable for human consumption and 2501.00.51 is denatured or industrial-use salt.
