SS-EN 16811-1 Nordic De-icing Salt Standard — Specification Guide
SS-EN 16811-1 is the Swedish national adoption of EN 16811-1 with Nordic-specific emphasis on Type 2 natural-moisture sea salt and pre-wetting compatibility for sub-zero winter operations in Sweden, Norway, Finland, Denmark.
SS-EN 16811-1 — Nordic De-icing Salt Standard
SS-EN 16811-1 is the Swedish (and broader Nordic) national adoption of the European Standard EN 16811-1: De-icing agents — Sodium chloride. Sweden's Trafikverket (Swedish Transport Administration) led the Nordic adoption, with Norway's Statens vegvesen, Finland's Väylä and Denmark's Vejdirektoratet following with parallel national references. Egypt Globe Group ships SS-EN 16811-1-compliant Type 2 natural-moisture sea salt from North Sinai (El-Arish / Bardawil) and the Red Sea to Nordic depots, ferrocyanide-free, with every lot verified against the Nordic parameter set by the port laboratory before the Bill of Lading.
Standard at a glance
| Clause | Requirement | EGG verification method | Frequency |
|---|---|---|---|
| NaCl content | ≥ 95 % (matches EN 16811-1 Grade B) | Chemical analysis (argentometric chloride) at the port laboratory | Every lot, before B/L |
| Insolubles | ≤ 4 % | Gravimetric water-insolubles | Every lot |
| Moisture — Type 2 natural | ≤ 3.5 % | Loss on drying | Every lot |
| Moisture — Type 1 kiln-dried | ≤ 1.5 % (less commonly required) | Loss on drying; dryer outlet checks | Every kiln-dried lot |
| Particle size — preferred | 0/8 mm with d50 typically 2–5 mm; 2–8 mm fraction suits Trafikverket spreaders | Sieve analysis per EN 933-1 | Every lot; per-screen checks during production |
| Anti-caking | Usually no E535 (Nordic environmental preference for ferrocyanide-free) | Anti-caking declaration (none); ferrocyanide assay on request | Every lot |
| Pre-wetting compatibility | Required — uniform absorption of MgCl₂ 32 % or NaCl 23 % brine | Pre-wetting uniform absorption test | Per contract |
| Heavy metals | Pb, As, Cd, Hg reported at ppm level | AAS / ICP at the port laboratory | Per contract |
| Sampling | Representative composite of the loaded lot | EN 932-1 / ISO 11648 sampling plan | Every lot; witnessed by TÜV Austria / SGS / Intertek when contracted |
Nordic-specific emphasis
Standard Nordic winter operating conditions (long sub-zero periods, frequent freeze-thaw, heavy traffic on motorways) favour particular salt characteristics:
1. Type 2 natural-moisture sea salt is preferred
- Why: Egyptian sea salt arriving with natural 2.5-4% moisture stockpiles better in covered Nordic depots; no kiln-drying premium
- Nordic salt depots are typically enclosed/covered so moisture handling isn't a problem
- Lower FOB cost (no drying step) = better total delivered economics
2. Pre-wetting compatibility is critical
- Nordic operations universally pre-wet with MgCl₂ brine (32%) or NaCl brine (23%)
- Salt grain structure must accept brine evenly — fine + medium grades preferred
- Working temperature extension to -20°C with MgCl₂ pre-wet
3. Coarse-fraction limits
Pure lump salt is less useful in Nordic operations because modern Trafikverket spreaders are calibrated for 2-8 mm fraction range. Lump cargo must be re-crushed at depot, adding cost.

Egyptian Nordic-grade salt
Egypt Globe Group ships SS-EN 16811-1-compliant sea salt to Nordic markets via Mediterranean lines to Gothenburg (SEGOT), Stockholm (SESTO), Oslo (NOOSL), Helsinki (FIHEL), Copenhagen (DKCPH).
Typical Nordic-spec SKUs
Typical assay (sea salt source — North Sinai + Red Sea)
- NaCl: 96.5-97.5%
- Insolubles: 1.5-2.5%
- Moisture: 2.5-3.5% (natural)
- Particle size: 1-8 mm (≥90% within range)
- Anti-caking: NONE (ferrocyanide-free for Nordic environmental preference)
- Lead, arsenic, cadmium, mercury: ppm-level, reported on the per-lot CoA
Typical Nordic procurement cycle
- Tender publication — typically March-April by Trafikverket and parallel Nordic authorities for upcoming winter
- Bid submission — May-June, including 3-year framework agreement options
- Award — June-July
- Pre-positioning — July-October to ~80 salt depots across Sweden, ~150 across Nordic region
- Operational use — October-April
Typical Trafikverket annual procurement: 120,000-180,000 MT across multiple framework lots. Norway: ~80,000 MT/year. Finland: ~40,000 MT/year. Denmark: ~50,000 MT/year.

How EGG certifies conformity
Many regional exporters are inconsistent lot-to-lot because the specification is checked once, on a type sample, and then assumed. Egypt Globe Group's Quality Assurance division has been at the nucleus of the group since incorporation in 2014 and certifies every lot, not the product type:
- Source release — the on-site laboratories at the Siwa Oasis and Qattara Depression rock-salt mines and at the North Sinai (El-Arish / Bardawil) and Red Sea (Ain Sokhna) saltworks assay each production lot for NaCl, insolubles and moisture before it is released for processing or trucking. Rock salt is guaranteed ≥ 97.00 % NaCl; sea salt is classified raw 94–97 %, washed 97.5–98 % or double-washed ≥ 99 %.
- Processing verification — screening, kiln-drying and any E535 dosing are run to the standard's grade / type definition and re-checked on the processed lot.
- Port laboratory gate — the port-side QC team at the loading port takes a composite sample per the ISO / ASTM sampling plan, runs the full parameter set of the standard and issues the per-lot Certificate of Analysis before the Bill of Lading. Zero tolerance on specification deviation: a lot outside the CoA is rejected at the loading port, never re-graded or renegotiated.
- Independent verification — on request, TÜV Austria (primary, EU / GCC), SGS, Intertek (US / UK / ECOWAS) or Bureau Veritas (all ISO/IEC 17020 + 17025; Cotecna on request) sample during loading, run witness or independent tests and issue a Certificate of Inspection with sealed retained samples.
- Contractual guarantee — the specification is guaranteed at the port of loading and binding under the sales contract; voyage condition is governed by the B/L and marine insurance. Laycan discipline with documented NOR / SOF keeps the verified lot and the vessel aligned.
