What industrial salt means
"Industrial salt" is sodium chloride (NaCl) — the same compound as table salt — graded and processed for non-food uses. The world produced about 275 million tonnes of salt in 2024 and an estimated 270 million tonnes in 2025; China (56 million t), the United States (40) and India (30) lead, and Egypt produced about 2.3 million tonnes in each year (USGS Mineral Commodity Summaries 2026).
The USGS publishes an end-use split for the United States, the best-documented market: the chemical industry took about 42 % of salt sold in 2025 — chlorine and caustic soda makers above all — and highway de-icing about 37 %. No public source gives a reliable global split, so none is quoted here.

Egypt in the US market. Egypt supplied 6 % of United States salt imports in 2021–24, the fourth-largest source after Mexico (26 %), Chile (23 %) and Canada (21 %) (USGS, 2026). Heavy metals and food / industrial differentiation
For food-contact and pharma grades, lead (Pb), arsenic (As), cadmium (Cd), mercury (Hg) are controlled to ppm levels:
- Pb ≤ 2 ppm
- As ≤ 0.5 ppm
- Cd ≤ 0.5 ppm
- Hg ≤ 0.1 ppm
For deicing and chlor-alkali grades, the heavy metals spec is less stringent since the product does not contact food. This makes the underlying rock or solar salt feedstock significantly less expensive than pharmaceutical grade.
