EN 16811-1 — European De-icing Salt Standard

EN 16811-1:2016: "De-icing agents — Sodium chloride — Part 1: Sodium chloride for the production and use of de-icing agents" is the European standard for de-icing rock salt and solar salt used on motorways and roads in the EU, EFTA and the UK. Egypt Globe Group supplies EN 16811-1 compliant salt across all grades and types — rock salt from Siwa Oasis and Qattara Depression (guaranteed ≥ 97.00 % NaCl) and sea salt from North Sinai and the Red Sea — with every lot verified against the grade, type and gradation clauses by the port laboratory before the Bill of Lading.

Grades + Types

EN 16811-1 defines salt by two dimensions — grain composition (Grade A/B/C) and treatment (Type 1/2):

Grades — composition

GradeNaCl % minInsoluble % maxUse
Grade A96%3%Motorway pre-treatment, high-speed roads
Grade B95%4%High-speed roads, urban roads
Grade C (Lump)95%5%Stockpile lump for re-crushing or coarse application

Types — treatment

Type 1
Kiln-dried, moisture ≤ 1.5%, anti-caking E535 (sodium ferrocyanide) ≤ 80 ppm permitted
Type 2

Combined designation examples

"EN 16811-1 Grade A 0/6.3 Type 1"
Motorway pre-treatment, kiln-dried, optional anti-caking, ≥96% NaCl
"EN 16811-1 Grade B 2/8 Type 2 Natural"
High-speed road, natural moisture, no anti-caking, ≥95% NaCl
"EN 16811-1 Grade C 10/40 Lump"
Stockpile coarse, ≥95% NaCl
06

Anti-caking declaration

EN 16811-1 distinguishes salt with and without anti-caking additive:

Type 1 with E535
Sodium ferrocyanide ≤ 80 ppm (YPS — Yellow Prussiate of Soda)
Type 1 without E535
Available for ferrocyanide-restricted procurement (Nordic preference)
Type 2 Natural
Never has E535; natural moisture replaces flow-aid function

Procurement officers MUST specify which they want — anti-caking is required by some markets (UK Highways, US state DOTs, Scandinavia) and banned by others (Germany Bundesländer, Switzerland, environmental-priority French regions).

07

Pre-wetting compatibility

Modern EU operations pre-wet salt with:

MgCl₂ brine
at 30% (preferred for -15°C operations)
CaCl₂ brine
at 32% (sub-zero extension)
NaCl brine
at 23%

Pre-wetting extends working temperature, reduces salt scatter, and improves first-pass melt response.

How EGG certifies conformity

Many regional exporters are inconsistent lot-to-lot because the specification is checked once, on a type sample, and then assumed. Egypt Globe Group's Quality Assurance division has been at the nucleus of the group since incorporation in 2014 and certifies every lot, not the product type:

  1. Source release — the on-site laboratories at the Siwa Oasis and Qattara Depression rock-salt mines and at the North Sinai (El-Arish / Bardawil) and Red Sea (Ain Sokhna) saltworks assay each production lot for NaCl, insolubles and moisture before it is released for processing or trucking. Rock salt is guaranteed ≥ 97.00 % NaCl; sea salt is classified raw 94–97 %, washed 97.5–98 % or double-washed ≥ 99 %.
  2. Processing verification — screening, kiln-drying and any E535 dosing are run to the standard's grade / type definition and re-checked on the processed lot.
  3. Port laboratory gate — the port-side QC team at the loading port takes a composite sample per the ISO / ASTM sampling plan, runs the full parameter set of the standard and issues the per-lot Certificate of Analysis before the Bill of Lading. Zero tolerance on specification deviation: a lot outside the CoA is rejected at the loading port, never re-graded or renegotiated.
  4. Independent verification — on request, TÜV Austria (primary, EU / GCC), SGS, Intertek (US / UK / ECOWAS) or Bureau Veritas (all ISO/IEC 17020 + 17025; Cotecna on request) sample during loading, run witness or independent tests and issue a Certificate of Inspection with sealed retained samples.
  5. Contractual guarantee — the specification is guaranteed at the port of loading and binding under the sales contract; voyage condition is governed by the B/L and marine insurance. Laycan discipline with documented NOR / SOF keeps the verified lot and the vessel aligned.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between EN 16811-1 Grade A, Grade B and Grade C?
Grade A requires at least 96% NaCl with insolubles no more than 3% and is used for motorway pre-treatment and high-speed roads. Grade B requires 95% NaCl with insolubles no more than 4% for high-speed and urban roads. Grade C, the lump grade, requires 95% NaCl with insolubles no more than 5% and is stockpiled for re-crushing or coarse application.
What do Type 1 and Type 2 mean in an EN 16811-1 designation?
Type 1 is kiln-dried to 1.5% moisture or less, with E535 sodium ferrocyanide anti-caking permitted at up to 80 ppm. Type 2 is natural-moisture salt at 3–4% with no anti-caking and no kiln-drying. Buyers must state which they need: anti-caking is required by UK Highways, US state DOTs and Scandinavia, and banned by German Bundesländer, Switzerland and environmental-priority French regions.
Which gradations does EN 16811-1 define?
0/2 fine for pre-wetting brine preparation and fast melt; 0/4 common for motorway pre-treatment and urban roads; 0/6.3 medium, the motorway standard; 2/8 coarse for high-speed motorways where longer-lasting action is needed; and 10/40 lump for stockpiles that are re-crushed to working size. Sieve analysis is per EN 933-1 on every lot.
Which Egyptian SKUs are available to EN 16811-1?
Eleven SKUs cover every grade and type: rock salt PS-ROCK-DEIC-A-FINE (A, 0/2), PS-ROCK-DEIC-A (A, 0/6.3), PS-ROCK-DEIC-B (B, 2/8), PS-ROCK-DEIC-C (C, lump 10/40) and PS-ROCK-DEIC-PW (pre-wetted); sea salt PS-SEA-DEIC-A, PS-SEA-DEIC-A-NAT (Type 2, 3% moisture), PS-SEA-DEIC-B, PS-SEA-DEIC-B-NAT (Type 2, 3.5%), PS-SEA-DEIC-BULK-NAT and PS-SEA-DEIC-PW. Typical assay is 96.5–97.5% NaCl for Grade A, with rock salt guaranteed at 97.00% minimum, and 95.5–96.5% for Grade B.
Does EN 16811-1 salt ship with CE marking and a Declaration of Performance?
A Declaration of Performance is issued per product designation where applicable, with third-party verification by TÜV Austria on request. Each shipment also carries a per-lot Certificate of Analysis per the EN 196 series issued before the Bill of Lading, an EN 933-1 gradation report, a Grade and Type compliance letter, an anti-caking declaration stating with or without E535, a pre-wetting compatibility report where relevant, an SDS per CLP in the destination language, and an EUR.1 preferential Certificate of Origin.
