Same mineral, same standards

Both origins are natural gypsum, calcium sulphate dihydrate, quarried by open-cast bench mining from Miocene evaporite beds: in Spain around Sorbas in Almería, in Egypt in Sinai and along the Red Sea and Gulf of Suez coasts. Both are sold to cement mills as set retarder, to plasterboard lines as calcining feed and to farmers as a sulphur and calcium amendment, and both are specified against EN 13279 for gypsum binders and ASTM C22 for gypsum rock.

The buying difference is the certificate. For a cement mill, purity governs SO₃ dosing and therefore the setting time of the finished cement; for a plasterboard line it governs slurry water demand and board strength. A lot that drifts from 88 % to 78 % dihydrate changes both. Egypt Globe Group samples every lot at the quarry face and again at the port, determines purity by combined-water and sulphate analysis per ASTM C471M and EN 13279-2, and releases the cargo on a Certificate of Analysis before the Bill of Lading; a lot below the contractual floor is rejected at the loading port. A Spanish producer's certificate covers its quarry; ask for the lot analysis and the retained sample.

Two readings. First, Spain's book is Atlantic: the United States, the United Kingdom, Canada and Brazil took the majority of its tonnage, markets that are a long way from any Egyptian port. Second, the two origins meet in West Africa. Spain's Nigerian cargoes averaged about 10.6 dollars a tonne on the WITS figures, so a West African buyer is choosing between a longer voyage from Egypt's Mediterranean coast and a shorter one from Almería, against purity consistency and the certificate set. That is the lane where the per-lot CoA matters most, because it is the lane where the price difference is smallest.

Is Spanish gypsum purer than Egyptian gypsum?
Not as a rule. Both are natural Miocene evaporite gypsum sold against the same specifications, EN 13279 for plaster binders and ASTM C22 for gypsum rock. Egypt Globe Group releases raw rock at a guaranteed floor of 85 % CaSO₄·2H₂O, typically 90–97 %, with SO₃ at 39.5 % or more, chloride at 0.10 % or less and free moisture at 3.0 % or less, measured on every lot at the loading port. Spanish producers certify their own quarries; ask for the producer's analysis for the lot, not the deposit average.
Which origin is cheaper to ship to a given port?
Geography decides. Spain loads at Garrucha in Almería, the busiest gypsum port in Europe, which is a short voyage to the United States, the United Kingdom, Canada, Brazil and West Africa. Egypt loads Sinai gypsum at Ain Sokhna on the Red Sea, with no Suez Canal transit to the Gulf, India, Bangladesh and East Africa, and Western Desert gypsum at Damietta, Alexandria and El Dekheila on the Mediterranean. West Africa is the one region both origins serve at scale.
How large are the two exporters?
In 2024 Spain exported 9.64 million tonnes of gypsum and anhydrite worth 136.7 million dollars, the second-largest exporter after Oman, with the United States taking 3.04 million tonnes. Egypt exported 64.3 million dollars of gypsum and anhydrite, the fifth-largest exporter, with Nigeria at 34.0 million dollars and Ghana at 14.0 million dollars as the two largest markets. Spain extracted 13 million tonnes in 2021 with 70 % coming from Almería.
Where do Spanish and Egyptian gypsum compete directly?
Nigeria and Ghana. Spain shipped 1.17 million tonnes to Nigeria and 342,000 tonnes to Ghana in 2024; Nigeria and Ghana were Egypt's two largest gypsum markets in the same year, at 34.0 and 14.0 million dollars. A West African cement mill or plasterboard plant is therefore choosing between the two origins on landed cost, purity consistency and the certificate chain, not on availability.
What are the order terms for Egyptian gypsum from Egypt Globe Group?
Raw gypsum rock from 1,000 MT, with contracts to 100,000 MT, in lump 0–50 mm for cement retarder, 0–150 mm for plasterboard or calcining feed and 0–3 mm granules for agricultural use. Calcined plaster of Paris at 90 % hemihydrate or more from 200 MT FCL, up to 20,000 MT. Lead time is 2–4 weeks, FOB standard with CIF for plaster and CFR or DAP on request. Every lot carries a Certificate of Analysis for purity, combined water, SO₃, moisture and sizing issued by the port laboratory before the Bill of Lading.
