Bulk Rock Salt for Deicing — EU vs US vs Nordic vs CIS Grades Compared
Side-by-side comparison of EN 16811-1, ASTM D632, BS 3247, SS-EN, and GOST 13830 deicing salt grades. Spec tables, particle size, moisture, FOB price ranges, container vs vessel economics for bulk Egyptian rock salt.
If you're sourcing bulk Egyptian rock salt for deicing, the first question is: which regional spec do you need to match?
This guide compares the five major international standards we ship to — EN 16811-1, ASTM D632, BS 3247, SS-EN 16811-1 (Nordic), and GOST 13830 (CIS) — with side-by-side spec tables, particle-size analysis, and indicative FOB pricing.
At-a-glance comparison
| Spec | Region | Min NaCl | Max moisture | Particle size | Anti-caking |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| EN 16811-1 Grade A | EU motorway | 97% | 1.5% (kiln) | 0/2 / 0/4 / 0/6.3 mm | E535 (or Type 2 free) |
| EN 16811-1 Grade B | EU high-speed | 97% | 1.5% | 2/8 mm | E535 |
| EN 16811-1 Grade C | EU stockpile/lump | 97% | 1.5% | 10-40 mm lump | n/a |
| EN 16811-1 Type 2 | EU (Med / S Europe) | 97% | 3-4% natural | varies | Free |
| BS 3247:2011 | UK + Ireland | 97% | 1.5% | 1.0-6.0 mm | E535 |
| ASTM D632 Grade 1 | US + Canada | 97% | 1.5% | 4.75-9.5 mm | E535 |
| ASTM D632 Grade 2 | US + Canada | 97% | 1.5% | 2.0-4.75 mm Fine | E535 |
| AASHTO M-143 | US/state DOT | 97% | 1.5% | (per ASTM D632) | E535 |
| SS-EN 16811-1 | Nordic | 97% | 1.5% | 0.5-8 mm | Pre-wetting compatible |
| GOST 13830 Grade I | CIS | 97% | 1.5% | 0.5-5 mm | Free |
| GOST 13830 Grade II | CIS bulk | 95% | 1.5% | 1.2-10 mm | Free |
What changes with the spec
Particle size is the biggest driver of regional preference. EU + UK favour finer fractions (0/6.3 mm motorway, 1.0-6.0 mm UK Highway) because European spreaders + winter-traffic densities call for fast melt + dispersed coverage. US + Canada use coarser fractions (4.75-9.5 mm Grade 1) because state DOT spreaders are calibrated for higher application rates per lane-mile + larger crystals slow melt extends ice-prevention duration.
Anti-caking — required (E535 sodium ferrocyanide ≤80 ppm) by most major standards, BANNED by Germany Bundesländer and parts of Switzerland and France on environmental grounds. EN 16811-1 distinguishes "Type 1" (with E535) from "Type 2" (without). If your tender forbids ferrocyanide, specify Type 2 or our pre-wetted variants which use NaCl/MgCl₂ brine instead.
Moisture — Type 2 EU sea salt at 3-4% moisture is significantly cheaper than kiln-dried (typically 25-40% lower FOB) because we skip the kiln-drying step. Buyers with covered depot storage and an immediate-application workflow can accept Type 2 without performance penalty.
Sea salt vs rock salt for deicing — the real trade-off
We carry both. The buying decision is mostly:
Choose Bulk Egyptian Rock Salt for Deicing if:
- Your stockpile is uncovered (rock salt's low natural moisture handles rain better)
- You're in a continental climate (CIS, Eastern Europe, Nordic)
- You need maximum freight efficiency per dry tonne
- You want lump/coarse fractions for slow-melt pre-treatment
Choose Bulk Egyptian Sea Salt for Deicing if:
- You're in a maritime climate (UK, France, Spain, Italy)
- Type 2 natural-moisture (3-4%) is acceptable for cost savings
- You want fast-melt fine fractions (0/2 mm or 2.0-4.75 mm)
- Carbon footprint is a tender criterion (solar evaporation = near-zero embodied CO₂)
Pre-wetted deicing salt
For pre-treatment fleets working at -10°C to -20°C, we ship pre-wetted product:
Compatible with all major spreader OEMs (Schmidt, Epoke, Falköping, Henke). See Pre-Wetted Sea Salt and Pre-Wetted Rock Salt SKUs.

Quality at the Core — verified supply from Egypt Globe Group
The analysis above is published by the export desk of Egypt Globe Group, an Egyptian B2B commodity house incorporated in 2014 with an internal Quality Assurance division at its nucleus. Across salt, cement and clinker, fertilizers, chemicals, industrial minerals, agro and metals, every lot is laboratory-tested at the port of loading and released on a Certificate of Analysis before the Bill of Lading; independent inspection by TÜV Austria, SGS, Intertek or Bureau Veritas is available on every consignment, and a lot outside specification is rejected at the port rather than renegotiated.
| Commitment | What it means for the buyer |
|---|---|
| Zero tolerance on specification deviation | No re-grading or renegotiation after the fact — an out-of-spec lot does not load |
| Per-lot laboratory verification | Certificate of Analysis or Mill Test Certificate issued before the Bill of Lading |
| Independent third-party inspection | ISO/IEC 17020 / 17025 bodies at any of seven Egyptian ports; retained samples held 90 days |
| Laycan and grading discipline | Documented Notice of Readiness and Statement of Facts; sieve, assay and moisture verified per lot |
