Egypt's port codes are UN/LOCODEs: five characters, the country code EG followed by three letters for the location. The ones cargo buyers ask for most are Alexandria EGALY, Port Said East EGPSE, Damietta EGDAM, Safaga EGSGA, El Dekheila EGEDK, Adabiya EGADA, Ain Sokhna EGSOK, Port Said EGPSD and Suez EGSUZ. Every code on this page is taken from the UN/LOCODE code list published by UNECE; the full list of the 41 Egyptian locations that carry a port function is below.
Alexandria's main harbour, sometimes called the old port to tell it apart from El Dekheila, is EGALY. El Dekheila, a separate deep-water port west of the city, has its own code, EGEDK, and Abu Kir to the east is EGAKI.

How to read an Egyptian port code
- EG is Egypt's ISO 3166 country code; the last three letters identify the location, so EGALY is Alexandria and EGDAM is Damietta.
- The code list gives each location a function classifier: 1 = port, 2 = rail terminal, 3 = road terminal, 4 = airport, 5 = postal exchange, 6 = multimodal, 7 = fixed transport such as a pipeline terminal, B = border crossing. A place is a seaport in the list only when function 1 is set.
- Ain Sokhna has two entries: EGSOK, named Sokhna Port, and EGAIS, named Ain Sukhna. Both carry the port function. This site uses EGSOK.
- Al-Arish has no port-specific code. The list holds EGAAC, El'Arish, with road and airport functions only. Confirm with the carrier which code it files for an Al-Arish loading before the bill of lading is drafted.
- Codes such as EGALX, EGDKH, EGARI and EGEAR have circulated in older systems but are not in the UN/LOCODE list. A booking or bill of lading that carries one of them should be corrected before it is issued.
